Camping Tents - Making the Right Choice   by James Crosbie

So you're thinking of setting out on a camping adventure. But you realize that you're going to need a new tent. Which of the camping tents are right for you?

Well, there are a few important factors that you need to keep in mind when looking for the right shelter. The most important factor is anticipating or judging which part of the world you'll be traveling in and what time of year you plan to do it. Another factor is how many people will be in your party - you certainly want to have plenty of room for both people and equipment. And you want to do a dry run before getting out in the wilderness or campground.

The part of the world you'll be traveling in and what time of year it is plays a huge role in getting the right tent. If you'll be traveling in heavy snow and wintry conditions, then a 4 season tent is an absolute necessity. A 3 season tent will serve you just fine in Spring, Summer and Fall - but it is just too light and thin for heavy snow and freezing temperatures. A 4 season tent is heavier to carry, but it's worth it to be completely protected in extreme winter type conditions.

How many people will there be on your camping trip? I would get a tent that is designed to hold more than your number of people. For example, if you have 2 people on your trip - you might want to go with a 3 person or a 4 person tent. Especially if you're carrying a good bit of gear, or have larger than average people in your party. Get the measurements of the tent you're thinking of purchasing and measure it out on the floor to see if you and your companions will be able to fit comfortably with your gear. Sometimes it's okay to be cozy if the weather is cool - but usually more room is better than less room.

Do a dry run before you get out in the field. You don't want to be putting your tent up for the first time when you get out in the woods. Put it together at home first so you will be able to solve any problems and get practice with how it works. It's so much easier to put up your tent and take it down when you've done it a few times. Trying to put your tent together at night and/or in the rain is not an easy task - especially if you've never put it together before.
