Camping with Kids by Jeff Matura
Going camping with your children can be a really fun way to reconnect as a family away from daily distractions and technology. Even if your children are more likely to sit inside during the day on their computer, given the opportunity they will really enjoy the great outdoors. With a bit of careful planning you and your family will be able to have a really fun, adventurous vacation.
Leave Technology Behind The first thing you need to do before you even start packing for the camping trip is to make sure your children know that they will not be allowed to bring technology on the trip. This may be a tough thing to do, especially as kids are so attached to their phones, gameboys and other electronics. However, if you allow your kids to bring these items, they'll be consumed by their games in their own little world. By putting your foot down and saying no, you will be able to have a much more family-oriented vacation where nature is and outdoor pursuits are the focus of the trip.
Limit the Toys While you will want to leave the technology behind, you should still bring some toys for the kids so that they have entertainment to occupy themselves while you relax. Consider bringing things like a Frisbee, football, books and a few board games. Leave their other toys behind. Chances are you have limited room in your car or RV, so things like bikes, roller blades, Nintendos and other everyday items should be left at home. Besides, this is a trip about being in nature and doing things like hiking, swimming, kayaking, building fires and roasting marshmallows - things your kids can't do everyday.
Contact the Park Before you head out on your trip, be sure to contact the park or organization that looks after your campsite to see what types of activities are available for children. Some parks have organized events for children like hikes or story telling. There are other parks that have jungle gyms and other play areas built specifically for children. Finally, take a look at the family-fun activities available such as fishing, easy hiking trails, canoe rentals, bird watching, swimming and more.
If you take a little time to do some careful planning, you can ensure a really fun, happy family vacation while camping. Remember that children love to learn and are naturally curious about nature. Take this camping trip as an opportunity to foster this side of your kids and take a much needed break from technology. Even if your kids put up a fuss about it before the trip, they will thank you in the end.
